One of the greatest men we have had the privilege of knowing has taken his final lap and the Checkered Flag has waved for Jim's race on this earth. Jim's faith in God and his deep love for his family are just two of the values we have taken from our knowing him. Jim's life of faith and family touched everyone in a most positive way, and his competitiveness in the racing world inspired many to follow his example. Our condolences to Jim's family and may God receive this great man into His kingdom. Jim ran "the good race and fought the good fight."

My deepest sympathy to the Sauter family.  I was very sad to hear of Jim's passing.  I was introduced to the world of stock car racing in July of 1970 at the La Crosse Interstate Speedway.  Jim is part of that memory with Tom, Dick, and Marv along with many racing memories over the years.  God speed Jim.

I worked with Jim in the IROC series throughout the 90s , I really admired his driving talent and work ethic. Jim would run lap after lap with all the new guys in the series that maybe didn't have a lot of stock car experience until they were comfortable . But most of all Jim was just a cool guy to sit around and talk to about cars, family, old racing stories you name it he had a great outlook on life .My sincere condolences

November 3, 2014 7:44 PM

Jim's passing has left a big hole in our lives.  He was a wonderful friend and willing helper for Virgil whenever he needed help on anything, at the Chapel, or for a personal need.  I don't think there was anything Jim couldn't fix, or make new, when he put his mind to it.

God bless all of you in your great losses so close together.  But what a consolation to know he and Mardell died  just in time to receive all the prayers of the Church for All Souls' Day and the whole month of November devoted to prayers for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Jim was so devoted to The Blessed Mother, the Rosary, and the Poor Souls. What a blessing.

November 3, 2014 6:42 PM

So very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Always enjoyed visting with him at Daytona Beach while he was testing the Iroc cars. Always remembered Jim taking me for my first and only laps around the Speedway. In the mid 70's Jim and I both drove  racecars for Bud Stevens from Centerville. Racing has lost a great spokesman for the racing community.

Godspeed Jim.

Our sympathies to the families.

Dear Sauter family:
Jim will be sorely missed.  He was a great advocate for the little guy back "in the day."
His participation in the important work that the Central Wisconsin Racing Assn was doing in the 70's-80's impacted racers all over the nation.  He was a great guy to race against as he was always fair - not easy to pass mind you but there was always room - just barely.
An icon to the racing world is gone. God Bless Jim.
